10 things you didn’t know about the 90s

What’s not to love about the 90s? We had Forrest Gump and The Lion King, Nirvana and The Spice Girls, Party of Five and 90210. Read on for a list of things from the 90s you probably didn’t know and some you should be glad you weren't aware of.

  1. Remember the mushrooms from the Mario Bros. games? The ones that made Mario grow into Super Mario or have super speed in Mario Kart. Rumour has it that these cartoon fungi are based on a real mushroom with psychedelic effects that make it feel as though you are growing in size when consumed. Nintendo insists that the similarities are purely coincidental, but you can decide for yourself...

  2. In Super Mario 64 (can you tell where I spent most of my childhood), Boo’s fast, high-pitched laugh is actually just Bowser’s laugh sped up. Go on, get out the old N64 and see for yourself.

  3. Springfield's favourite hillbillies and incestuous couple Cletus and Brandine have 44 children. In true redneck style some of their names were Crystal Meth, Incest, Dubya, Normal-Head Joe and Mary WrestleMania.

  4. Maggie Simpsons’ dummy sucking was “voiced” by The Simpsons creator Matt Groening. Side fact: Maggie was named after Matt's younger sister Margaret.

  5. Space Jam, or as I like to refer to it, Michael Jordan's bio pic, is the highest grossing basketball movie of all time (and arguably the best movie of all time).
  6. The above statement proven by the fact that MJ said this:

  7. Will Smith's fictionalised version of himself in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was nominated for and won several Television and Music awards. After all, who doesn't love a story all about how Will's life got flipped, turned up-side-down. Turns out NBC didn't, they originally cancelled The Fresh Prince after its fourth season. After a massive outcry from fans, NBC renewed the show.
  8. Smith not only learnt his own lines as the Fresh Prince, he also remembered everyone else’s dialogue that was in the scene with him. In early episodes, you can see him mouthing the words of his costars while waiting for his lines to come. Go on, youtube it and see for yourself, or better yet, have a marathon - you can thank me later.

  9. The Ren and Stimpy Show famously featured numerous references to the fact that the two were a couple. They lived together, slept in the same bed and Ren even had a picture of Stimpy on his nightstand. The couple even had simulated intercourse in an episode where Ren saws a log on Stimpy’s back, which very clearly looks like anal sex. Ren rubs his nipples first and when Ren stops, Stimpy asks him to “finish the job.” It ends with sawdust that looks like ejaculate all over Stimpy’s back. Oh my!

  10. The infamous but cruel line "You're a virgin who can't drive," came from Brittany Murphy's character Tai in Clueless. Later, in an interview, Murphy admitted that at the time of filming the movie she was a virgin who could not drive. Her perfect delivery of the "way-harsh" line made it that much more ironic later on.

Hope you enjoyed learnt some thing new!!

Twosies - byemilylewien

Twosies have been one of the cutest things I have seen on the fashion scene lately. A few weeks at go, I had the luxury of getting my hair done and my hairdresser told about these amazing twosies with buckles. So pulled up by insta and saw these fab twosies design by local Perth designer Emily Lewien. We were lucky enough to interview the very talented Emily Lewien.

What’s your background and how did you start Byemilylewien?

I started studying fashion since year 10 in school I knew from then it was what I wanted to do. I was always whipping up my school social events outfits for river cruses and balls, I never wanted to have something I would see anyone else in, though usually it would fall to bits after that one wear. I wanted to acquire the skills as soon as I could to start making wearable clothes for my self and friends so I started part time doing VET fashion course whilst completing year 12. Straight out of school I went full time in to my fashion course at polytechnic west Bentley and grew my label through my 3 years of study there.

Your two sets are adorable what inspired you to start designing them?

I create things I love and I would wear, as well as trying to fashion forecast for what is going to come in season. I felt like the sets were one of those things that (at the time I started creating them) every one wanted but they were nowhere to be found. I had seen a few hand made labels bringing them out at the same time but through personal experience and even in photos I knew they were not of a high quality. So being that there was (at the time) not much competition in creating high quality luxurious sets with amazing quality fabrics I just went for it and they have been a hit ever since.

Where can we find you designs?

I sell my designs at monthly market stalls in Perth at the Fremantle markets. I then sell the left over stock via my facebook page to allow my many interstate and overseas costumers a chance to purchase.

What the best part of your job?

Working for my self, I love being my own boss and having the all creative license on my designs. It’s a great feeling having your name on a label and knowing its all your own hard work and looking back on ranges and thinking ‘’wow, that’s all me … I created that’’.

What does a normal working day look like for you?

Wake up, go to the gym or for a run, have a healthy energy fueled breakfast then go in my studio and get a full days work in weather it be designing, cutting or sewing. I give my self a few breaks but always fill them with checking emails, online orders and I love to give my instagram updates as much as possible during the week to give my followers something to be exited about.

Who inspires you and why?
I find it hard to pin point who inspires me because in the fashion industry its hard to be inspired by another designer with out feeling like they influence you to the point you become similar. Though last year I did work experience with Garth cook and seeing the ins and the outs of his creative journey in producing his winter 14 range really inspired me with his creative out look on everything – he really helped me and pushed me to produce my graduation range to my full creative capacity.

Motto or quote you live by?

Everything happens for a reason!

Now some fun questions

What’s your guilty pleasure?

Coffee dates, no matter how busy I am I cant say no to going out with girlfriends for a catch up and a good coffee!

If you had a superpower, what would it be and why?
Super sonic sewing power. I admit I am a speedy sewer but there are just those times when I have orders out of my ears, or a market coming up where I wish I could produce so much more with out having to get things manufactured.
